LAHORE: Special Assistant to the Chief Minister (SACM) of Punjab for Information, Hasaan Khawar has said that the media is a very powerful medium and has a crucial role to play in bridging the gaps in society . He said the cameras and pens of reporters are so powerful that society would move in the direction they point it; he voiced these views during a seminar on “The Essentials of Journalism: Responsible Use of Information” at Government College University (GCU) in Lahore on Wednesday. Hasaan Khawar, who is also a former Ravian, was the keynote speaker and guest speaker at the seminar chaired by GCU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Asghar Zaidi and organized under the auspices of the Young Journalists Society (YJS). Hasaan Khawar said previous governments artificially controlled the dollar’s rate, which depleted the country’s foreign exchange reserves. He said now our foreign exchange reserves have gone from $7 billion to $23 billion. GCU Vice-Chancellor Prof Asghar Zaidi said enacting laws against fake news and propaganda is the first step. However, the real challenge is to ensure the effective implementation of these laws without any prejudice. Later, the Vice-Chancellor was sworn in to the new executive committee of the University’s Society of Young Journalists.
