SLU returns home to host Millsaps

HAMMOND, Louisiana – The University of Southeast Louisiana men’s basketball team will play their first home game in more than a month on Wednesday, welcoming Millsaps, a non-conference foe, at 7 p.m. at the varsity center.

The game between the Lions (4-9) and the visiting Majors (2-8) will be televised on ESPN +. Wednesday’s contest will be the first in Hammond for SLU since a 121-79 victory over Ecclesia on November 22. The match counts as an exhibition for Millsaps.

Southeastern will be looking to end a four-game losing streak at home. The Lions have just completed their toughest part of the non-conference schedule which saw SLU suffer road losses in Louisville, Iowa State and Iowa.

In the 93-62 loss to the Hawkeyes on December 21, Joe kasperzyk led SLU with 14 points and five assists. Gus Okafor and Jalyn hinton with 12 and 11 points respectively.

At 75.5 points per game this season, SLU includes a trio of players with double-digit scoring averages. Okafor leads the team with 12.8 points per game, followed by Hinton (11.5 points per game) and Keon Clergeot (11.4 pages per day). Clergeot is also the team’s top playmaker with 3.4 assists per game, while Hinton (7.4 rpg) and Okafor (5.4 rpg) are the team’s best rebounders.

Opponents are averaging 75.8 points and 16.2 turnovers per game against Southeastern. Hinton’s 23 blocked shots lead the Southland Conference, while the team’s top Kasperzyk’s 23 interceptions are good for seventh in the league standings.

Millsaps wears a four-game skid in Wednesday’s game. The Majors lost to Centenary (twice), Colorado College and Sul Ross State during their streak.

Cameron Williams leads Millsaps with 15.2 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. Brock Brown leads the team with 14 assists. Defensively, Aaron Ursin (12 blocks) and Doug Watson (12 interceptions) are the leaders of the Majors.

Wednesday will be the 15the Southeastern and Millsaps meet with the Lions having won the previous 14 matches. The teams last met in the 2016-17 opener as Southeastern stood out for an 85-39 win over the visitors.

Following Wednesday’s game, Southeastern will travel to Katy, TX to participate in the Southland Tip-Off Event January 6-8 at the Merrell Center. The Lions open the men’s tournament with an 11 a.m. game against HBU next Thursday. All of Katy’s games will be televised on ESPN +.
