Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 handles multimedia on a budget

Samsung has added a new budget tablet to its portfolio in hopes of tackling the entry-level iPad. Say hello to the Galaxy Tab A8. At first glance, Samsung’s latest offering looks like a replica of its predecessor, except for the camera lens housing which is now circular instead of the square profile of the Galaxy Tab A7. But the guts have been improved, Samsung says.

Up front is a 10.5-inch (1920 x 1200-pixel) WUXGA LCD display with uniform bezels on all sides, a 16:10 aspect ratio, and an 80% screen-to-body ratio. Samsung doesn’t say what processor it installed in its latest tablet, but says it’s an octa-core chip with a maximum clock speed of 2 GHz. The company is only giving a vague detail about a 10% increase in CPU and GPU performance. Of course, it won’t race against the Bionic A-series processors that Apple is including in its iPad lineup.

The tablet will be available in 3GB and 4GB RAM versions, while tabletop storage options are 32GB, 64GB and 128GB. Samsung has equipped the Galaxy Tab A8 with an 8-megapixel rear camera. and a 5 megapixel front camera. However, the selfie camera is positioned along the right edge, which means the tablet should be used in landscape orientation for video calls.

It’s not an iPad killer

It can cling to 4G LTE airwaves, but availability of cellular models varies by region and carrier partnerships. A 7,040mAh battery keeps the lights on and also supports 15-watt fast charging. However, the retail package comes with the slower 7.75W power brick, while the 15W adapter is sold separately. Unfortunately, the tablet comes with Android 11 out of the box, and it’s unclear when it will be dealt with with the Android 12 upgrade.

Buyers can choose the tablet in a trio of colors: gray, rose gold, and silver. It will hit shelves in the US market next month, but Samsung is silent on the asking price for its latest budget tablet. We’ll keep you posted on pricing as soon as the tablet goes on sale through retailers and Samsung’s own online outlet. But based on its predecessor, the Galaxy Tab A8 is expected to start below the $ 299 mark.
