The Elk Mountain IsoTruss® Tower is a great example of us helping a customer resolve an ongoing repair and maintenance issue at a remote critical infrastructure site with a durable and innovative solution.

The Elk Mountain System Shelter, which includes a hinged tower mast, is a major communications site serving approximately 180 square miles. The Wyoming BLM handles emergency communications for wildfires, as well as any aircraft – including federal aircraft – assisting with wildfires, as well as managing communications with administrative and other personnel, such as biologists conducting field activities for the BLM.

Due to high winds of up to 120 mph, as well as 9 to 10 feet of winter snow and ice, the tower’s steel mast repeatedly broke at the bolts, or section hinge, over the past four years, causing the tower’s antenna to end up knocked down multiple times. IsoTruss designed and transported a 40-foot IsoTruss® carbon fiber tower weighing 250 pounds, then bolted and connected it to the shelter of the existing system. The IsoTruss® lightweight tower was delivered to the remote site with a light truck and installed with a small labor force in just one day.

“The original tower kept breaking at the hinge, and we needed a solution, but in this situation it needed to be customized,” said Vance Andersen, BLM Wyoming Tele-manager. Also at BLM we deal with life cycle use so in addition to the lightweight attribute of the structure what really caught my attention was the lack of carbon footprint it leaves by producing it. At BLM we try to take care of the land, so we want to make sure that we try to have as little impact on the environment as possible.

IsoTruss® carbon fiber cell towers reduce material usage twelve times on a weight basis, resulting in a 70% reduction in carbon emissions over the life of the tower.
