HAMMOND, Louisiana – The University of Southeast Louisiana men’s basketball team kicks off a four-game week Monday night when they host Ecclesia College at 7 p.m. at the University Center.
The Lions (2-2) just lost 78-61 on the road to SMU (3-1) Thursday night. SLU fell 48-18 late in the first half before cutting the lead in half, 54-39 with 10 minutes remaining but couldn’t come close. The Lions had a pair of doubles-doubles from Jalyn hinton, who scored 21 points and took 10 rebounds, and Gus Okafor with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
SLU enters Monday, after recovering its 300e career on the University field win last week, seeking to remain undefeated at home (2-0) in the 2021-22 campaign. In opening week of the season, the Lions overtook Southeastern Baptist College and held off a solid effort from Paul Quinn College.
Despite SMU’s setback, the Lions still lead Southland in free throws (63), free throw percentage (63 for 79 – 79.7%) and rebounds (170 – 42.5 points per game).
Hinton and Okafor are the Lions’ top scorers for four games. Hinton, a South Florida transfer, is averaging 12.8 points per game, 7.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocks to lead the league. Okafor, a junior from Baltimore, Md., Scores 12.3 points per game and leads the team with 7.3 rebounds per night.
Ecclesia (5-3) is a Division I NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) from Springdale, Arkansas. The Royals have won five early in the season despite the absence of a senior in the roster. The team is also compromised by large-scale recruiting with a roster of 14 players from eight different states.
As for the Lions, after their clash with the Royals on Monday night, they will embark for a weekend in Fort Myers, Fla., To play at the Hilton Garden Inn Florida Gulf Coast University Invitational.
SLU will face Purdue Fort Wayne (2-1) out of the Horizon League on Friday night at 3:30 p.m. CT. On Saturday, the Lions face off against host Atlantic Sun Conference Florida Gulf Coast (1-2) at 6:00 p.m. CT before concluding Sunday weekend against Mid-American Conference Western Michigan (1-2) at 12:30 p.m. . CT.
