Catholic Standard wins nine 2022 Catholic Press Awards – Catholic Standard

The Catholic standard The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington’s newspaper and website received nine awards at the 2022 Catholic Press Awards announced July 7 at the Catholic Media Association’s annual conference held in Portland, Oregon this year.

Here are the 2022 Catholic Press Awards received by the Catholic standard:

A first place for the best website – newspaper, Catholic standard, Mark Zimmermann, editor. Editor Richard Szczepanowski updates the site weekly. In addition to news and features, the site includes the Black Catholic Voices multimedia series and other special series, a Junior Saints children’s section, photo galleries and commentary. The judges praised the site, sayingThis entry stands out for its strong design, which promotes cleanliness and readability by giving ample space to each news entry, emphasizing images rather than copy. The site deftly places ads discreetly, a feature that has spoiled other entries. In mobile views, well-placed bottom buttons and a clean, simple menu make navigation easy. »

A second place for best sports journalism – Sports News, for “Olympic swimming champion Katie Ledecky returns to Stone Ridge School from Sacred Heart,” Catholic standardstory of Maureen Boyle photos by Andrew Biraj. The judges commented: “Excellent. Solid work!”

A second place for the best photo report – News, for “Walk with Mary”, Catholic Standard, photos by Mihoko Owada. The judges noted, “The package features well-composed photos that clearly highlight different points of the celebration.”

A third place for the best series of multimedia packages, for the “Black Catholic Voices” series on Catholic standard website, interviews with Mark Zimmermann, photos by Andrew Biraj, videos by Geoffrey Ros and Ron Bethke. The judges commented that the series contained “important and interesting interviews”.

A third place for the best photographer – sacramental, for “Young people with disabilities receive communion at the white mass”, Catholic standard, photo by Andrew Biraj. The judges praised the photo saying, “The photographer captures just the right moment to portray the joy of this event. The photographer wisely focuses on the face of the main subject to make it the focal point and give meaning to the event.

London Gill, then a third-grade student at St. Michael’s School in Ridge, Maryland, drew a picture of herself smiling under her face mask for the Catholic Standard Junior Saints award-winning children’s feature on “Learning and keep the faith during the pandemic”.

  • An honorable mention for the best report on children and adolescents, “Junior Saints: Learning and Keeping the Faith During the Pandemic”, Catholic standard journal and website, writings and artwork by Catholic school students in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington.

The Pregonero, the Spanish-language newspaper and website of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, received 23 Catholic Press Awards in the 2022 competition, including a third prize for Spanish Publication of the Year and a second prize for Best Website for a Spanish publication.
