2022 SLU Football Preseason Position Report No. 9: Quarterbacks

HAMMOND, Louisiana – After waiting in the sidelines for the past two seasons, the Southeastern Louisiana University quarterback Cephus Johnson III is set to lead the No. 16/17 Lions attack.

Although he sits behind two-time All-American Cole KelleyJohnson saw plenty of time in the Lion’s offense, rushing for five touchdowns and throwing two more in his first two campaigns at Hammond. Now the Mobile, Alabama has been given the keys to the offense by the head coach Frank Scelfo and offensive coordinator Greg Steven.

Scelfo and Stevens have been impressed with a group of quarterbacks that includes Johnson, Eli Sawyer and Grant Tisdale.

“Cephus has really improved this offseason in terms of balance and progression,” Stevens commented. “We want to see him continue to develop as a leader, but there’s no doubt that his athleticism gives us an extra dimension to our attack.

“Eli is a very accurate passer and passes his readings very quickly,” Stevens continued. “Grant is a winner and both of these guys have really improved a lot this offseason. We’re confident that three quarterbacks can help us win games if called.”

Scelfo echoed many of Stevens’ thoughts on the progress of the group as a whole.

“We saw great competition among this group this fall,” Scelfo said. “Cephus got separated in that role, but both Eli and Grant had good camps. These guys are competitive and we can see them improving every day.

“Cephus’ ability to deal with football will be key to his success,” added Scelfo. “Whether he’s running or passing, he has to make informed decisions with the ball in his hands.”
